Becoming the Doge of Venice
Pietro I Candiano became the leader of Venice around April 887. He followed two other Doges, Orso I Participazio and Giovanni II Participazio. Giovanni II was an older and much-loved leader. Pietro was chosen to rule alongside him.
A Battle for Trade Routes
After becoming Doge, Pietro I Candiano quickly led a military mission. His goal was to fight the Narentines. These were people living in Dalmatia, a region across the Adriatic Sea from Venice. The Narentines had been causing problems for Venice since 886. They were making it hard for Venetian ships to travel and trade safely.
The Attack on Makarska
Doge Pietro gathered a fleet of twelve galleys, which were large ships. He sailed them to the port of Makarska. This place was known as Mokro back then. When they arrived, Pietro's forces managed to sink five Narentine ships.
Fighting on Land
After the naval victory, Pietro I Candiano and his soldiers landed near Mokro. They moved further inland, hoping to defeat the Narentines completely. However, the Narentines fought back very strongly. They attacked Pietro's forces and defeated them.
The First Doge to Die in Battle
Sadly, Doge Pietro I Candiano was killed during this battle. He died on 18 September 887. He was the first Doge of Venice to die while fighting for La Serenissima. This Italian phrase means The Most Serene and was a nickname for the Republic of Venice.
After the Battle
After Pietro's death, the Venetians made an agreement with Prince Branimir of Croatia. Branimir ruled Croatia from 879 to 892. The Venetians agreed to pay him money every year. This payment was a tribute. It allowed them to travel and trade safely in the Croatian part of the Adriatic Sea.
A Time of Peace
For many years after Pietro's death, there were no new wars with the Croats. This peace lasted from 887 until 948. Historians believe this shows that Venice continued to pay the tribute. It helped them keep the peace and protect their trade.
Who Ruled Next?
After Pietro I Candiano died, Giovanni II Participazio briefly became Doge again. He ruled until a new leader could be found. The next Doge was Pietro Tribuno, who was Pietro I Candiano's great-nephew. Pietro I Candiano's own son, Pietro II Candiano, also became Doge later on.
