Pietro Tagliavia d'Aragonia (died 1558) was an important Italian Roman Catholic leader. He served as a bishop and later became a cardinal. Cardinals are high-ranking officials in the Catholic Church, just below the Pope.

Life and Career

Pietro Tagliavia d'Aragonia was born around 1500 in Palermo, a city in Italy. His father was Giovanni Vincenzo Tagliavia, who was a count, and his mother was Beatrice d'Aragonia e Cruillas.

Early in his life, Pietro worked as a cleric in a town called Mazara del Vallo. This meant he was preparing for a role in the church.

Becoming a Bishop

On May 28, 1537, Pietro was chosen to be the Bishop of Agrigento. A bishop is a senior leader in the Christian church. He officially became a bishop on June 6, 1537.

Later, on October 10, 1544, he was promoted. He became the bishop of the larger and more important area of Palermo.

Council of Trent

As a bishop, Pietro Tagliavia d'Aragonia took part in the Council of Trent. This was a very important meeting of Catholic Church leaders. It happened in different sessions over many years. Pietro attended from 1545 to 1547 and again from 1551 to 1552. The Council of Trent discussed important religious teachings and reforms for the church.

Becoming a Cardinal

On December 22, 1553, Pope Julius III made Pietro a cardinal priest. This is a very high position in the Catholic Church. Cardinals are special advisors to the Pope.

Cardinals also vote for a new Pope when one dies. This election meeting is called a papal conclave. Pietro did not attend the conclave in April 1555 that elected Pope Marcellus II. However, he did participate in the conclave in May 1555. In that meeting, Pope Paul IV was chosen as the new Pope.

On July 17, 1555, Pietro received his "red hat." This is a special hat worn by cardinals. He was also given a "titular church," which is a church in Rome that a cardinal is linked to. His church was San Callisto.

Death and Burial

Pietro Tagliavia d'Aragonia passed away in Palermo on August 5, 1558. He was buried in the grand Palermo Cathedral.
