Pilar Bayer Isant, born in 1946, is a famous Spanish mathematician. She is known for her work in number theory, which is a branch of mathematics that studies numbers and their properties. She used to be a professor at the University of Barcelona.

Education and Career

Early Life and Studies

Pilar Bayer was born in Barcelona, Spain, on February 13, 1946. Before she became a mathematician, she was a talented musician. In 1967, she became a certified piano teacher from the Municipal Conservatory of Barcelona.

She went to the University of Barcelona and finished her first degree in 1968. Later, in 1975, she earned her Ph.D. from the same university. A Ph.D. is the highest degree you can get in a specific subject. Her Ph.D. was about "maximal extensions of a global field where a prime divisor completely decomposes." She was one of the first two women to earn a Ph.D. from that university.

Working as a Professor

From 1977 to 1980, Pilar worked as an assistant at Universität Regensburg in Germany. After that, she worked briefly at the University of Santander and the Autonomous University of Barcelona.

In 1982, she joined the faculty at the University of Barcelona. She taught mathematics there for many years. She retired in 2016, becoming a professor emerita. This means she is a retired professor who keeps her title because of her important contributions.

Contributions to Mathematics

Pilar Bayer has written many important books and papers about mathematics. With Montserrat Alsina, she wrote a book called Quaternion Orders, Quadratic Forms, and Shimura Curves in 2004. This book is about advanced topics in number theory.

Her research covers many different areas of number theory. These include topics like automorphic forms, diophantine equations, elliptic curves, and zeta functions. These are all complex mathematical ideas that help us understand numbers better.

Beyond just number theory, Pilar also wrote about the history of mathematics. With Jordi Guàrdia and Artur Travesa, she wrote Arrels germàniques de la matemàtica contemporània in 2012. This book explores the history of mathematics in Germany from the mid-1800s to the mid-1900s. In total, she has written or edited 19 books.

Awards and Recognition

Pilar Bayer has received many honors for her work. In 1998, she won the Narcís Monturiol Medal from the Generalitat de Catalunya. This award recognizes people who have made great scientific and technological achievements.

Her book Arrels germàniques de la matemàtica contemporània also won an award. It received the Serra d'Or Critic's Prize in 2013.

In 2004, she was an Emmy Noether Visiting Professor at the University of Göttingen. This is a special honor for female mathematicians.

She is also a member of several important academies. These include the Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences and the Institute for Catalan Studies. Being an academician means she is recognized as a leading expert in her field.

To celebrate her 70th birthday, the University of Barcelona published a special two-volume collection of her best works in 2016. This shows how much her contributions are valued.
