About Pilar Zabala
María Pilar Zabala Aguirre was born in a town called Legazpi. Soon after she was born, her family moved to San Sebastián. This is the main city of Gipuzkoa, where she grew up. Later, she moved to Santander to study. She focused on History and Geography at the university.
Her Education and Research
In 1991, Pilar Zabala earned her Ph.D. in history. She studied at the University of Cantabria in Spain. Her special project for her Ph.D. was about how taxes were managed in the Kingdom of Castile during the 1500s. This work became very important for people studying that topic.
She is an expert in how taxes worked in Castile in the 16th century. She also knows a lot about the history of Yucatán when it was a colony. She is also very interested in the culture of Basque people who had to leave their home because of the Spanish Civil War in 1936.
