History of Pilot Mound

The area where Pilot Mound is located has had a post office since 1865. This means mail services were available even before the town was officially created. The town of Pilot Mound itself was established later, in 1881. Its name comes from a tall hill, or "mound," nearby. This mound offers a great view of the land around it, almost like a pilot could see everything from above.

Geography and Location

Pilot Mound is found at specific coordinates: 42.162554 degrees North and -94.014372 degrees West. The city covers a total area of about 0.98 square miles (2.54 square kilometers). All of this area is land, with no large bodies of water inside the city limits. A stream called Bluff Creek flows close to the town.
