Pine Island is a small community in Horry County, South Carolina. It is called an "unincorporated community." This means it does not have its own local government. Instead, it is part of the larger county area.
A Look Back in Time
Pine Island started as an interesting experiment. In the early 1900s, it was an experimental farm. This farm was set up like a factory. It had different sections, and careful records were kept.
Around this time, a train line was planned. It was supposed to go from Conway to the Pine Island area. A year later, this train line reached Myrtle Beach.
A store was built in Pine Island. It sold important things like animal feed, fresh meat, and eggs. A lumber mill also opened. This mill made wood for the first buildings in Myrtle Beach. One of these was the Seaside Inn, which was Myrtle Beach's very first hotel!
Unfortunately, the experimental farm did not succeed. The person who owned the land had to sell it.
Pine Island Today
Today, the Pine Island area has grown a lot. Many new homes have been built there. You can also find some businesses that make or produce things.
The community is located inside the Carolina Forest area. This area is called a "Census-designated place" (CDP). A CDP is a special area that the government uses for counting people. It helps them gather information for the census.
