Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Pingviini (which means "penguin" in Finnish) is a popular Finnish brand of ice cream. It is owned by a company called Froneri Finland.

You can easily spot Pingviini ice cream by its cool penguin logo. This tasty ice cream has been a favorite in Finland since the 1930s!

Pingviini ice cream is made at the Turenki factory in Janakkala, Finland. The brand has even won an Avainlippu ("key flag") award. This award shows that the ice cream is made in Finland by Finnish workers using Finnish milk.

Nestlé Finland bought the Pingviini brand in 2004. The ice cream continued to be developed and made in Turenki. In 2016, Nestlé moved the brand to Froneri Finland. Nestlé owns Froneri Finland along with a British ice cream company called R&R.

How Pingviini Started

The story of Pingviini ice cream began in 1935. A company called Oy Jäätelö - Glass Ab started making ice cream in a brand-new factory in Helsinki. Just a couple of years later, Valio bought the Pingviini brand.

At first, the ice cream was made in Turku. Later, it was also produced in other cities like Helsinki, Vyborg, Tampere, and Oulu. The Turenki ice cream factory, where it's made today, was built in 1962.

In the early days, Pingviini ice cream was sold in waffle cones and on plates. You could buy it at Valio dairy shops and kiosks. In 1936, Valio opened Finland's very first ice cream parlor in the Lasipalatsi building in Helsinki. Over time, ice cream kiosks became popular all over Finland. Today, there are about 200 Pingviini ice cream kiosks open across Finland every summer.

In 2004, Nestlé bought Valio's ice cream products. The development and production of the ice cream stayed in Turenki.

The Turenki Ice Cream Factory

Pingviini ice cream is created and made at the Froneri Finland factory in Turenki, Janakkala. The Turenki factory was built in 1962. It was needed because more and more people in Finland wanted to eat ice cream!

Today, this factory is one of the largest and most modern ice cream factories in the Nordic countries. It employs about 200 people, and sometimes even up to 300 people during busy times.

The main goal at the Turenki factory is to make ice cream that Finnish people love. They focus on great flavors and high quality. For example, the Aino ice cream line was developed here. It includes Nordic berry flavors like cranberry, blueberry, and Arctic cloudberry, as well as liquorice. In 2019, Aino oat ice cream was also added to the line.

There's even an ice cream bar at the factory! It's for groups of visitors and for learning. Many school groups from all over Finland visit the ice cream bar. During May, which is a popular time for school trips, about 1500 to 2000 visitors come to the factory.

How Pingviini Is Advertised

When Pingviini first started, its penguin logo was just black and white. Over the years, they tried different colors, like red in the 1980s. In the early 1990s, the logo got its current blue-and-white look. The Pingviini ice cream cone also became available in the mid-1990s.

Pingviini Products

The Pingviini brand includes many different ice cream names. Some of these are Pingviini, Aino, Classic, Puffet, Muru, Pingviini Puikko (which was called Eskimo until 2021), and PEHMIS.

For homes, you can find one-liter Pingviini packages with about twenty different flavors. There are also ice cream cones, ice cream sticks like Classic, and home packages from the Aino line.

If you visit kiosks and cafés, you can find about 30 different loose ice cream flavors. They also have special flavors each year. Some past special flavors have included tar (in 2009) and bubble gum (in 2019).

Pehmis is a special name that the company has protected. This means that only their product can use the name "Pehmis." This helps make sure people don't get it confused with other similar products.
