History of Pinotepa Nacional
Early Names and Location
During the time when Spain ruled Mexico, this place was known as Pinotepa del Rey. After Mexico became independent, its name changed to Pinotepa del Estado. The town is located about 200 meters (656 feet) above sea level. It sits in the Mixteca de la Costa region of Oaxaca.
People of African Heritage
Pinotepa Nacional has a special history because many of its people have African ancestors. There are two main ideas about how this happened. One idea is that during the colonial period, African people were brought to this area. They worked on large farms called haciendas.
Another idea suggests that these people are descendants of Africans whose ship wrecked off the coast of Oaxaca. This happened while they were being brought to the Americas. Pinotepa Nacional is one of the few places in Mexico with a strong Afro-Mexican heritage. Other areas with similar history include Guerrero, Sinaloa, and Veracruz states.
Local Crafts and Culture
The town is well-known for its beautiful handmade items. People here create knitted and embroidered goods. They are also skilled at making knives, machetes, and saddles. These crafts show the rich culture and traditions of the area.
