Pioneer Energy's Journey: How It Started
Pioneer Energy was founded by Murray Hogarth. He learned a lot about the oil business while working at Gulf Canada Limited. After three years, he decided to start his own gas station company.
The very first Pioneer Petroleums station opened on November 29, 1956. It was located at 859 Upper James Street in Hamilton, Ontario.
Modernizing Pioneer: New Services and Brands
In 2011, Pioneer Petroleums changed its name to Pioneer Energy LP. The company also updated its services to offer more to customers.
- Snack Express is Pioneer's main convenience store. It sells common snacks and drinks. It also offers healthier food choices.
- Verve is a newer type of store that started in 2012. It has a wider range of special products.
- Many newer Pioneer stations now have Clean Express Car Washes. These car washes offer different cleaning options for cars.
In 2013, Pioneer Fuels was created. This part of the company sells Esso brand heating oil to homes and businesses. It started in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Pioneer Fuels now serves about 21,000 homes and is growing across Atlantic Canada.
Joining Parkland Fuel: A Big Change
In 2014, another company called Parkland Fuel Corp. decided to buy Pioneer Energy. This deal included 393 gas stations. About 148 of these stations used the Pioneer brand name. The deal was completed in 2016.
Pioneer's Customer Rewards: Loyalty Programs
Pioneer used to have a "Full-Service Pledge." This meant they promised to clean your car's windshield and check under the hood. This was for customers who bought 10 litres or more of fuel. If they didn't do it, customers would get a free tank of gas!
How Pioneer Rewarded Customers Over Time
Pioneer has always had ways to thank its loyal customers:
- In the late 1950s, they gave out collector stamps.
- In the 1960s, they introduced Pioneer Money.
- By the 1980s, this changed to Pioneer paper Bonus Bucks.
- In the mid-2000s, they started the Electronic Bonus Bucks card program. People with these cards also got special deals from Pioneer's partner companies.
Today, Pioneer uses a rewards program called Journie Rewards. This program also works at other gas stations that are part of the Parkland company.
Pioneer's Giving Back: Helping Communities
Pioneer has helped many charities in Ontario.
- Their "Give What You Can" campaign has given over $1 million to five children's hospitals in Ontario.
- Because of these efforts, the McMaster Children's Hospital was able to build the "Hogarth Family & Pioneer Energy Ophthalmology Centre." This is a special eye care center.
- Since 2012, Pioneer has supported Operation Yellow Ribbon. This program helps Canadian soldiers and their families.
- Pioneer also became a partner for the CHML/Y108 Christmas Tree of Hope. The money raised helps the CHML/Y108 Children's Fund. This fund supports McMaster Children's Hospital, the Salvation Army, and Hamilton Children's Aid.
- Pioneer has also worked with the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters. They helped with the Atlantic Salmon Restoration Project. This project helps bring back salmon to rivers.
