Earlier Names

The village first had the name La Greda. Later, its name was changed to La Unión. These names reflected different times in the village's past.

The Name Change to Pisco Elqui

In February 1936, a special law was passed in Chile. This law, called Law Decree 5,798, changed the village's name to Pisco Elqui. The main reason for this change was to support Chile's claim to a famous grape spirit called pisco. Both Chile and Peru have long discussions about where pisco originally came from. By naming the village Pisco Elqui, Chile wanted to show its connection to this drink.
