The Coquimbo Region (also known as the IV Region of Coquimbo) is one of Chile's 16 main areas. It's located in the middle of Chile, along the Pacific Ocean coast.

The capital city of the region is La Serena. It is about 400 kilometers (250 miles) north of Santiago, which is Chile's capital. Other important cities in the region include the port city of Coquimbo and the farming center of Ovalle.

History of Coquimbo

Coquimbo was first known as a province of Chile starting in 1826. Later, in 1974, Chile changed its administrative divisions. This is when Coquimbo became one of the official regions we know today.

Geography and Rivers

The Coquimbo region has interesting neighbors. To the north, it borders the Atacama region. To the east, it shares a border with Argentina. The Valparaíso region is to its south. Finally, the vast Pacific Ocean lies to its west.

Three important rivers flow through this region:

  • Elqui River
  • Limarí River
  • Choapa River

Population and Main Cities

As of 2015, about 771,085 people lived in the Coquimbo region. This means there were about 19 inhabitants for every square kilometer.

The biggest city in the region is its capital, La Serena. In 2002, it had about 160,148 people living there. The nearby port city of Coquimbo was also very large, with about 148,438 inhabitants at that time.

How Coquimbo is Governed

The Coquimbo region is divided into three smaller areas called provinces. These provinces help manage the region.

The three provinces are:

Each province has its own capital city. For example, La Serena is the capital of Elqui Province.
