Limarí Province (which in Spanish is called Provincia de Limarí) is one of the three provinces in the Coquimbo Region of Chile. Its main city and capital is Ovalle.
The province gets its name from the Limarí River, which is the most important river in the area.

Limarí Province covers an area of about 13,553 square kilometers (5,233 square miles). It is the second largest province in the Coquimbo region.
Where is Limarí Located?
Limarí is surrounded by different places. To the north, it borders the Elqui Province. To the east, it shares a border with Argentina. The Choapa Province is to its south, and the vast Pacific Ocean is to its west.

The main river flowing through the province is the Limarí River. It is about 64 kilometers (40 miles) long.
People Living in Limarí
According to the last national census in 2002, there were 156,158 people living in Limarí Province. This means that, on average, there were about 11.5 people living in each square kilometer.
The biggest city in the province is Ovalle. It is also the capital. In 2002, Ovalle had a population of 66,405 people.
How Limarí is Governed
Limarí is a province, which is like a smaller administrative area within a region. It is made up of five smaller areas called communes. The city of Ovalle is the capital of the province. A governor is in charge of running the province.
