The Pitmegea River is a cool stream located in the huge state of Alaska, in the United States. It flows through the western part of the North Slope Borough. This river is about 42-mile (68 km) long, which is like driving for almost an hour!

Where the River Flows

The Pitmegea River starts high up in the De Long Mountains. These mountains are part of a larger range in northern Alaska. From there, the river makes its way generally towards the northwest.

Journey to the Sea

The river's journey ends when it reaches the Chukchi Sea. This sea is part of the Arctic Ocean. The Pitmegea River meets the sea at a place called Cape Sabine. This spot is about 30 miles (48 km) east of another well-known place, Cape Lisburne.

The River's Name

The name Pitmegea has an interesting history. In 1888, a prospector (someone looking for valuable minerals) explored this river. He learned that its name came from the Inuit people. They called it Pitmegeak. This shows how important rivers were to the native people of Alaska.
