How Pitts Got Its Name

In the mid-1880s, Brock Owens and Ashley J. Pitts opened the first store there. At that time, the place was called Kings' Crossing. When people wanted a post office, the Postmaster General preferred a shorter name. J.A. King suggested "Pitts" to honor his son-in-law, Ashley J. Pitts. The name was accepted, and the post office opened on November 1, 1888. Ashley J. Pitts became the first postmaster.

Becoming a Town

The Georgia General Assembly officially made Pitts a town in 1905. This meant it had its own local government.

The Pitts Meteorite

On April 20, 1921, many people in southwest Georgia saw a bright streak across the sky. This was a meteor! It ended with an explosion and hit the ground in at least four spots just north of Pitts.

Scientists later found three pieces of this meteorite. One piece landed very close to a child playing outside. It was an iron meteorite. The biggest piece found weighed about 3.76 kilograms (over 8 pounds). You can see it today in the Smithsonian Institution Collection. The other pieces are still owned by private collectors. Local stories and details about the meteorite were written down in a scientific report.
