Pittsburg is a small, unincorporated community located in Tippecanoe Township, within Carroll County, Indiana. An unincorporated community is a place where people live but it doesn't have its own official local government like a city or town. Pittsburg is part of the larger Lafayette Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Pittsburg's Story: A Look Back
Pittsburg was officially started, or "laid out," in the year 1836. This means its streets and lots were planned out for people to build homes and businesses.
A post office was opened in Pittsburg in 1838. This was a very important place for people to send and receive letters and packages. The post office stayed open for many years until it closed in 1915. Interestingly, the name of the post office was spelled "Pittsburgh" with an "h" until 1894, when it changed to "Pittsburg."
It is thought that the community was named after the much larger city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Where is Pittsburg Located?
Pittsburg is found on the west side of the Wabash River. This river is one of the largest in Indiana. Right across the river from Pittsburg is the town of Delphi.
A main road, U.S. Route 421/State Road 39, goes right through Pittsburg. It follows a street called Monroe Street, making it easy to travel to and from the community.
