Placerita Canyon State Park is a special place in California. It's a state park found on the northern side of the western San Gabriel Mountains. You can find it in a quiet, rural part of Los Angeles County, between the cities of Los Angeles and Santa Clarita, California.

A Look Back in Time

The area around Placerita Canyon has been home to the Tataviam people for a very long time. In 1842, this land was temporarily part of a large Mexican land grant called Rancho San Francisco.

The First Gold Discovery

Placerita Canyon State Park protects the site of the first time gold was officially found in California. This happened in 1842, six years before the famous California Gold Rush. A man named Francisco Lopez was looking for wild onions. He found gold flakes on the roots of an onion plant under a special tree. This tree is now called the "Oak of the Golden Dream."

This "Oak of the Golden Dream" is so important that it is a California Historical Landmark #168.

Nearby Movie Ranches

The park is also close to several famous movie ranches. These are places where movies and TV shows have been filmed for many years. Some of these include the Monogram Movie Ranch—Melody Ranch and the Disney—Golden Oak Ranch.

Nature's Wonders

Placerita Canyon State Park is in a unique spot. It sits where the San Gabriel Mountains meet the Mojave Desert. This means you can see plants and animals from both mountain and desert areas here. It's like a special meeting point for different types of nature.

Plants and Trees

The park has different kinds of plant communities. You can find chaparral, which are tough shrubs that grow in dry areas. There are also woodlands with many Coast Live Oak trees.

Along the seasonal streams, you'll find riparian woodlands. These areas are full of trees that love water. Three native trees you can see here are arroyo willow, cottonwood, and native California sycamore.

The Mystery of White Oil

Placerita Canyon is also known for something very unusual: a natural seepage of 'white' oil. This oil is clear, not black like most oil found around the world. When it was discovered in the late 1800s, people were very surprised. A small pool of this clear oil can still be seen by a trail near the Nature Center.

Visiting the Park

Placerita Canyon State Park is located at 19152 Placerita Canyon Road, Newhall, California. The park is managed by the County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation.

What to Do at the Park

The park has a Nature Center which acts as a visitor center and museum. Here, you can learn more about the park's history and nature. You can also visit the Walker Cabin, which is a restored cabin from the 1920s. It shows how the Walker family lived long ago. The park also has many hiking and nature trails for you to explore.
