Plainview is a ghost town located in the southwestern part of Wharton County, Texas. A ghost town is a place where most people have left, leaving behind empty buildings. Plainview was once a small community with its own school. Today, only a few homes and an old town hall building remain.
Where Plainview Was Located
Plainview was found where two roads, Farm to Market Road 441 (FM 441) and Farm to Market Road 1163 (FM 1163), meet. This spot is southwest of a larger town called El Campo. If you were driving there, FM 441 would curve west and FM 1163 would curve east at the meeting point. Other nearby towns include Louise to the west and Hillje to the north.
Plainview's Past
Plainview had a school that was very important to the community. In 1916, the school was known as Plainview School #20. To help students get to class, four wagons pulled by mules were used. This cost about $100 each month! The school district was quite large, covering 40 sections of land.
By 1926, the school had four teachers and taught 130 white students and four black students. The school continued to operate until 1948. At that time, it joined with what is now the Louise Independent School District. An old meeting hall from Plainview was still standing in 1989 and was still there in 2014. It serves as a reminder of the community that once thrived there.
