Where is Planadas?
The municipality of Planadas is in the southern part of the Tolima department. It sits at the base of the Central mountain range. This mountain range is a part of the large Colombian Andes mountains.
What are its neighbors?
Planadas shares its borders with several places. To the north, it borders the municipalities of Ataco and Rioblanco. To the west, it borders the Cauca Department. To the southeast, it touches the Huila Department.
The History of Planadas
The area known as Planadas today has a long history. Its ancient name was TALÁ Bocanegra, dating back to 1562. This name came from Cacique Talá, a leader from nearby areas.
How the settlement began
The development of Planadas started in 1920. The governor of Tolima created a special colony in the region. This colony was for people who had broken certain rules. They were sent there to work and complete their sentences. This colony was called "South of Atá."
Later, in 1931, this colony was closed. A new police inspection office was created in the town instead.
In 1932, a Spanish missionary named Fermín Larrazábal gave advice. He told a group of explorers to build a town. They chose a flat area next to the Atá River. This is where the main town of Planadas is located today.
The first people who settled Planadas came from different regions. Some were from Antioquia (called antioqueños). Others were from Huila (called huilenses). Because of this, you can still find a mix of customs and ways of speaking from both regions in Planadas.
Becoming a Municipality
In 1935, Planadas was officially recognized. It became the main office for the police inspection of South of Atá. In 1961, its importance grew. It was named a special inspection area.
Finally, in 1966, Planadas became a full municipality. Its land was separated from the municipality of Ataco. However, this decision was later canceled in 1971 due to some errors. A new order was then issued. This order officially created the municipality of Planadas.
It is important to remember that Spanish soldiers first explored this land. This happened in October 1538. The original people living here were the Ataes, Cuiras, Guagua, and Patae Indians. They were part of the Paeces tribe. The area was also home to a leader named Cacique Yucairo.
