Planet Sketch is a super funny British-Canadian animated TV show. It was made by Aardman Animations (who made Wallace & Gromit!) and Decode Entertainment. The show first aired in the UK on CITV starting September 10, 2005. Later, it came to Canada on Teletoon on November 19, 2005. The series finished on September 16, 2008.

What is Planet Sketch About?

Every episode of Planet Sketch is packed with different short, funny stories called sketches. The show usually kicks off with a sketch called Nose Picker. In this one, a girl named Olivia pulls something surprising out of her nose! Whatever she pulls out is also the title of the episode in the first season.

After that, lots of other sketches fill up the show. It all ends with the June Spume and Melville sketch. Here, a girl named June Spume makes music using parts of her body, like her teeth as a piano! This music plays as the show finishes.

How the Show Changed Over Time

In the first season, Planet Sketch had a mix of 3D and 2D animated sketches. Some sketches would appear more than once, and some might not show up at all. Certain 2D sketches, like Sara Swapsy and Only Joking, were split into three parts with another sketch in between.

But in the second season, things changed! The show became completely 3D. Some older 3D characters and all the 2D sketches disappeared. New characters were added, and the animation style looked a bit different. Instead of June Spume, only Melville (the cat) appeared at the end, doing a cool dance before the credits.

Meet the Funny 3D Characters!

Here are some of the main 3D sketches you'd see on Planet Sketch:

  • Nose Picker: This is Olivia, the girl who pulls weird and wonderful things from her nose. Each item is the title of a Season 1 episode!
  • Ninja Handyman: A super-fast ninja who helps a family with everyday problems. In Season 1, the family loved him. But in Season 2, he became lazier and more clumsy, sometimes annoying them!
  • Japanese Fighting Fish: Three small, tough-talking fish named Robby, Billy, and Mac. They try to bully bigger fish or other sea creatures, but it always backfires on them!
  • Parping Ponies: Horace the horse and his Aunt Hortense try to hide Horace's embarrassing tummy troubles (flatulence). Sometimes, Aunt Hortense has them too!
  • Mr. Hives and Timbo: Timbo tries to avoid his old teddy bear, Mr. Hives, who always pops up saying, "Huggy, huggy!" He appears in the most unexpected places!
  • Napkin Squirrel: A storyteller tells tales about a paper squirrel. The squirrel thinks things that hurt it are "fun," but things that don't are "no fun at all."
  • Dr. Inosaur: A dinosaur doctor who tries to eat his patients! He always fails, whether he's in his clinic or at the hospital.
  • Captain Gagtastic: A supervillain who tells really bad jokes (anti-jokes) that make people cry instead of laugh.
  • Rude Limerick Boy: A boy who tries to perform a poem called a limerick on stage. But he's always stopped before he can say the last, rude word!
  • Mad Dad Scientist: A dad who pretends to be a crazy scientist working on an invention. His son, Kirk, always interrupts him, revealing he's just fixing something simple around the house.
  • The Gnaughty Gnomes: An old lady loves her garden gnomes, but then she faints when she sees them come to life and cause trouble!
  • News Reporters: Mike Today and Sally Van are news anchors who playfully argue about boys versus girls. In Season 1, they even had a crush!
  • Street Rappers: A group of three rappers who act very childish, which is totally different from their cool image. They often get caught by a bystander.
  • Why the Dinosaurs Died Out: A funny and silly explanation of why dinosaurs disappeared "60 million years ago last Tuesday."
  • June Spume and Melville: June plays musical instruments using her body parts while her cat, Melville, dances along.

Cool 2D Sketches from Season 1

In the first season, you could also find these 2D sketches:

  • My Mother the Armchair: A teenage girl is always embarrassed by her mom, who is literally a yellow armchair with a purse!
  • Sara Swapsy: A girl tries to trade all sorts of random items for something she wants from a stranger.
  • Only Joking: A young boy asks his dad "why" something happens. His dad gives a silly, made-up answer, saying "Only joking!" But later, the "joke" turns out to be true and causes trouble for the dad.
  • Ira and Lyra: Two girls tell their mom wild, fake stories to get each other in trouble. They always get caught because of a tiny detail.
  • Okay Coach, I'm Ready: Nathan dresses up for a sport, but his coach always tells him he's ready for the wrong one!
  • Bill and Phil: Two boys keep revealing themselves to be aliens or other space characters disguised in costumes.
  • Talent Show: A talent show featuring very unusual characters with strange abilities.
  • Alien Game Show: A game show hosted by aliens who speak gibberish. Contestants get points for right answers and get "tortured" for wrong ones!
  • Dragon Burping Contest: Another game show where two dragons compete to see who can burp the loudest and longest to earn points.

New 3D Characters in Season 2

Season 2 brought in some fresh faces and new 3D sketches:

  • The Two Astronauts: Jake and the Captain are astronauts whose spaceship computer acts like a silly human or does really dumb things.
  • The Hypno Poodle: A poodle who always gets what he wants by hypnotizing people, even his owners, into doing weird animal-like things.
  • Master Handyman: This is a white-dressed version of Ninja Handyman. He's much more helpful and less clumsy than the original!
  • Melville: He takes over from the June Spume sketch. Now, Melville is a janitor who starts dancing whenever the lights come on! The music he dances to changes in each episode.

Episodes

Planet Sketch aired its episodes in both full-length and shorter versions. The show had two seasons with a total of 39 episodes. The first 10 episodes were shown all together on Teletoon in Canada on November 19, 2005, as part of a special "Nonsense Day" event.

Broadcast

Both seasons of Planet Sketch were shown on CITV in the UK. The second season aired on Saturdays. Even though the series has finished, you might still catch some short clips (minisodes) on CITV!
