Axonometric projections
This picture shows three ways to draw 3D objects on flat paper.

Plans are like special maps or drawings. They show you how to build something or what a place looks like. Imagine you want to build a treehouse. You would need a plan! These plans are usually on paper. But they can also be digital files on a computer.

Plans help people understand how things are put together. They also show how things work. Architects use plans to design buildings. Engineers use them to create machines.

How We See 3D Objects on Flat Paper

Plans show objects that are three-dimensional (3D) on a flat, two-dimensional (2D) surface. Think of a house. It has length, width, and height. But a drawing of it on paper only has length and width.

To make this work, we use views or projections. These are special ways of drawing. They help us understand the 3D object from a flat picture. It's very important to know about these views to read plans correctly.

Different Ways to Project Images

There are several main types of projections used in plans:

* These views show an object straight on. It's like looking at one side of a box directly. * Plan View (or Floor Plan): This is what you see when you look down from above. A floor plan shows the layout of a building from the top. * Elevation: This is a straight-on view of the side of something. For a house, an elevation shows what the front or back looks like. * Section: This view shows what an object looks like if you cut through it. It's like slicing a cake to see the inside layers.

  • Axonometric Projections

* These drawings show three sides of an object at once. They make the object look 3D on a flat page. * Isometric Projection: This is a common type where all three axes (length, width, height) are equally angled. It makes objects look very clear and balanced. * Dimetric Projection: In this type, two of the three axes are equally angled. * Trimetric Projection: Here, all three axes are angled differently.

  • Oblique Projection

* This projection shows one side of the object straight on. The other sides are drawn at an angle. It's a simpler way to show 3D.

* This is how we see things in real life. Objects that are farther away look smaller. This makes drawings look very realistic. Artists often use perspective in their drawings.
