Important Nearby Locations
The southern tip of Cumberland Head is about 2.8 miles (4.5 km) east of Plattsburgh's shoreline. A few miles south of the bay is Crab Island. This island was also very important during the 1814 Battle of Plattsburgh. It is part of the landmarked area.
The Battle of Plattsburgh
In September 1814, British forces from Canada attacked Plattsburgh. They wanted to gain control of land to help them in peace talks that were happening. British soldiers took over the city on September 6.
Both sides prepared for a big sea battle to control Lake Champlain. American ships were lined up across the mouth of the bay. They stretched between Cumberland Head and Crab Island. The American navy won a major victory over the British fleet.
Land Battle at Plattsburgh
At the same time, American soldiers fought off British land forces. The British tried many times to cross the Saranac River but were stopped. One of the main American defenses on land was Fort Brown. This fort is also part of the landmarked area.
Honoring the Heroes
The Macdonough Memorial is another important part of the landmark. It is located in front of Plattsburgh City Hall. This memorial was dedicated in 1926.
It is a tall stone monument, about 135 feet (41 m) high. The memorial honors Captain Thomas Macdonough. He was the leader of the American naval forces during the Battle of Plattsburgh.
