Playa Santiago, also called Playa de Santiago, is a small town. You can find it on the south coast of La Gomera island. This island is part of the Canary Islands in Spain.
The town is unique because it's split between two different local areas, called municipalities. These are Alajeró and San Sebastián. The part of Playa Santiago that is in the Alajeró municipality is the biggest town in that area.
Life in Playa Santiago
Long ago, Playa Santiago had a fish factory. It used to can tuna and sardines. However, over time, there were fewer fish in the sea. Because of this, the factory had to close.
Even though the factory is gone, some fishing boats still work here. They catch fish and freeze it to send to other places. There's also a place in the port where boats can be fixed.
Ferries and Travel
For a while, there was a ferry boat called the Garajonay Exprės. It traveled from Valle Gran Rey to Playa Santiago. Then it went on to San Sebastián de la Gomera and finally to Los Cristianos. This ferry ran from 2002 to 2008. It stopped because it didn't get enough help from the government.
Later, another ferry, the Benchi Express, started running. It stopped in 2012. But don't worry! A new ferry, also called the Benchi Express, began operating in the summer of 2017. This makes it easier to travel to and from Playa Santiago by sea.
Getting There by Air
If you prefer flying, La Gomera Airport (GMZ) is very close. It's only about 3 kilometers away from Playa Santiago.
What to Do in Town
Playa Santiago has a nice pebble beach. It's generally a safe place to swim and relax. The town also has a hotel and many apartments where visitors can stay. You'll find lots of restaurants too, offering tasty food.
