San Sebastián de La Gomera is the main town and capital of La Gomera. This island is part of the Canary Islands in Spain. It is also home to the island's most important port.
In 2023, about 9,584 people lived here. The town covers an area of about 113.59 square kilometers (43.86 square miles).
Getting Around
The port in San Sebastián de La Gomera is very busy. Ferries travel from here to other nearby islands. These include Tenerife, La Palma, and El Hierro.
Some important streets in the town are Calle Real and F. Olsen. You can also find a bus station here. It is called Estación de Guaguas. This station helps people travel all over the island by bus. It is located on Avenida Del Quinto Centenario.
A Glimpse into History
San Sebastián de La Gomera has an interesting past. A famous explorer, Christopher Columbus, visited the town a long time ago.
On September 6, 1492, Columbus stopped here. He refilled his supplies and fixed his ships. After that, he left San Sebastián de La Gomera. He was starting his first big trip across the ocean. He thought he was going to the East Indies. But instead, he discovered the Americas!
