Discovering El Bibio Bullring

The Plaza de Toros de El Bibio is a large arena built for bullfighting. It is located in the El Bibio neighborhood of Gijón. This impressive building has a unique look, following the Neo-Mudéjar architectural style. This style uses elements from old Spanish and Islamic art, giving the bullring a very distinct and beautiful appearance.

A Look at Its History

The El Bibio bullring first opened its doors on August 12, 1888. The very first event held there was a bullfight featuring famous bullfighters of the time, Luis Mazzantini and Rafael Guerra, known as Guerrita.

Challenges and Rebuilding

Sadly, parts of the bullring were damaged in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War. After the war, the building was repaired and continued to be used. Later, in 1997, it went through a big renovation to make it even better and safer.

A Protected Landmark

Because of its historical and architectural importance, the Plaza de Toros de El Bibio was given a special status on March 20, 1992. It was declared a "Bien de Interés Cultural," which means "Property of Cultural Interest." This protects the bullring and ensures it will be preserved for future generations.

More Than Just Bullfighting

While the Plaza de Toros de El Bibio is primarily known as a bullring, it's not just used for bullfighting events. This versatile arena also hosts many other exciting activities. For example, it's a popular venue for music concerts, bringing famous artists and bands to Gijón. This makes it an important place for entertainment and culture in the city.
