History of the San Roque Bullring
The Plaza de toros de San Roque has been a part of the town's history for a long time. It is especially known for its role in the yearly Feria Real de San Roque, which means "Royal Fair of San Roque."
The Royal Fair of San Roque
The Royal Fair is the biggest yearly event in San Roque. It is a lively Street fair that usually takes place in the second week of August. The fair officially starts with a special ceremony where a "juvenile queen" and "child queen" are crowned. They are joined by their courts, which are like their royal helpers.
Even though the crowning happens on a Tuesday, the fun rides and food stalls at the Fairground El Ejido usually open on Wednesday. This day also features an exciting parade to kick off the main fair activities.
The Running of the Bulls
The Royal Fair ends on a Sunday night with a big fireworks show. But the celebrations aren't completely over until the next morning! At 7 AM on Monday, there's a traditional event called the Running of the Bulls. In San Roque, this event is known as the Toro del Aguardiente.
This running of the bulls has been a tradition every year since 1649. It gets its name because, traditionally, participants were offered a drink to help them feel brave before they ran. During the event, people run with bulls through the streets until they reach the Plaza de toros de San Roque. This exciting run marks the very end of the Royal Fair.
