A Look Back: Pleasant Grove's History
Early Days and Community Gatherings
In the 1850s, people started settling in the area that would become Pleasant Grove. It is believed that the first organized group of German Baptists in Douglas County met here in 1858. They gathered at the home of Stephen Studebaker. These early settlers helped build the community.
During Quantrill's Raid
A few years later, in 1863, a famous event called Quantrill's Raid happened. A group of raiders led by William Quantrill attacked nearby Lawrence. After attacking Lawrence, Quantrill and his men came close to Pleasant Grove. They destroyed some houses and barns in the area. They were looking for settlers who were against slavery.
Growth and Services
In 1877, the first German Baptist meeting house in Kansas was built in Pleasant Grove. This building served as a place for the community to gather. The community also had its own post office from 1875 until 1900. By 1912, Pleasant Grove had about 45 people living there. At that time, it started receiving mail through Rural Free Delivery, which meant mail was delivered directly to homes from nearby Baldwin City.
Education
Students in Pleasant Grove attend public schools in the Lawrence USD 497 school district.
