Plectophanes is a special group, or genus, of spiders. These spiders live in the South Pacific region, especially in New Zealand. They belong to a large group called araneomorph spiders, which are known as "true spiders." This means they are the most common type of spider you might see.
Plectophanes spiders are part of the Cycloctenidae family. This family includes spiders that often build funnel-shaped webs or hunt on the ground. The first time scientists described Plectophanes was in 1935. A scientist named E. B. Bryant gave them their name.
