The Plymouth Historic District is a special area in Plymouth, New Hampshire. It includes five important buildings and the town's main green. These buildings stand on the west side of the town common. They show how the town has grown since it was settled in 1763. This district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.

Exploring Plymouth's Historic Center

Plymouth became an official town in 1763. Many people started settling here in the 1770s. The town center is on the west bank of the Pemigewasset River. Its main shopping area runs along Main Street, which is also United States Route 3.

The Town Common

The town common is an oval-shaped park. Commercial buildings face it on the east side, along Main Street. On the west side is Post Office Square. This is where the historic buildings are located.

The most famous part of the common is a fountain. It shows a Boy Scout kneeling and holding water in his hands. A summer resident named George Borst designed it. The fountain was placed there in 1933. The town's first meeting house was built here long ago. Today, the 20th-century Congregational Church stands on that same spot.

Important Buildings

The Plymouth Historic District has several key buildings. Four of these buildings are very important to the district's history. They show different styles of architecture and how the town has changed.

The Town Hall and Courthouses

Just north of the church is Plymouth Town Hall. It was built in 1890. A New Hampshire architect named C. Willis Damon designed it. This building also served as a county courthouse.

Next to the town hall is the Old Grafton County Courthouse. This is one of New Hampshire's oldest public buildings. It was built way back in 1774. Today, it is a museum about local history.

Other Key Buildings

South of the church, you'll find the Pemigewasset National Bank building. It was built in 1885. This building is still used as a bank today.

Nearby is the United States Post Office building. It was built in 1936. These buildings show how the town grew over many years. The Plymouth Congregation Church is also in the district. However, it is not considered a contributing building to the district's historical importance.
