Pocahontas is the main character in Disney's animated movie Pocahontas, released in 1995. She also appears in its sequel, Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World (1998). This character and her story are inspired by a real historical person named Pocahontas.
As the daughter of a Native American leader, Pocahontas is the first American Disney Princess. She is also the first Disney Princess to have two different love interests in her stories. The actress Irene Bedard provided Pocahontas's speaking voice and was also the model for the character's look. Her beautiful singing voice was performed by Broadway singer Judy Kuhn in both films. Pocahontas is the seventh member to join the official Disney Princess group. She is also the first Indigenous American character in the Disney Princess line-up.

Who is Pocahontas?
Pocahontas is a brave and adventurous young woman. She is the daughter of Chief Powhatan, who leads the Powhatan people. She loves nature and has a strong connection to the land and its spirits.
Her Role in the First Movie
In the first movie, Pocahontas meets an English explorer named John Smith. Their meeting happens when English settlers arrive in her homeland. Pocahontas tries to bring peace between her people and the newcomers. She teaches John Smith about her culture and the importance of respecting nature.
Her actions help prevent a war between the two groups. She shows great courage and wisdom in trying to understand different ways of life.
Pocahontas's Journey in the Sequel
In the second movie, Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World, Pocahontas travels to England. She goes there as an ambassador for her people. Her goal is to show the English king that her people are not "savages" and to stop a war.
During her time in England, she learns about English customs and meets a new love interest, John Rolfe. She continues to be a strong voice for peace and understanding between cultures.

The creators of Pocahontas wanted her to feel real and authentic. They chose Irene Bedard, a Native American actress, to be her speaking voice. Irene Bedard also helped shape how Pocahontas looked and moved.
