What is a Roundhouse?

A roundhouse is a traditional building used by Native American communities. For the Pomo Indian people in the Point Arena area, this roundhouse was a central place. It was where they held important religious ceremonies and gatherings.

A Special Place for Pomo People

The Point Arena Rancheria Roundhouse is believed to be the largest and possibly the only building left that is so important to the religious life of the local Native Americans. The Pomo religion, at that time, was a mix of old traditions and new ideas. It included some beliefs from a period of change for Native American religions, along with parts of Christianity. For example, the building has a cross on top. It also has a main center post that dates back to 1890, which was included when the roundhouse was built.

Where is it Located?
