Pole Position is a super famous arcade racing game. It was made by Namco in 1982. A person named Toru Iwatani designed it. In this game, you get to drive a cool Formula One race car.
First, you do a special time trial lap. This helps you qualify for the main race. The race takes place at the famous Fuji Racetrack. After qualifying, you race against other cars. Your goal is to finish the race before time runs out. You also need to avoid crashing into other cars or things on the track!
Why Pole Position Was a Big Deal
Pole Position was super popular! It was the best-selling arcade game in North America in 1983. Over 21,000 game machines were sold. That made about $61 million!
This game was so loved that it came out on many different video game consoles. You could find it in Namco game collections. Some of these consoles included the PlayStation, Nintendo 64, Nintendo GameCube, and Xbox.
The Sequel: Pole Position II
Because the first game was such a hit, a sequel was released in 1983. It was called Pole Position II. This new game had even more tracks to race on. It included three brand new tracks, plus the original one from the first game.
