Poleñino is a small town, also called a municipality, located in the province of Huesca, Aragon, Spain. In 2018, about 200 people lived there.
Poleñino During the Spanish Civil War
During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), Poleñino became a place of help. A special hospital was set up there by a British medical team. This hospital was in a building that used to be the village's cultural center. It was chosen because it was close to the war's front lines in Huesca.
A Nurse's Story
An Australian nurse named Agnes Hodgson worked at this hospital in 1937. She kept a diary about her experiences. Her diary gives a detailed look at what it was like to care for injured people during the war. When she returned home, she shared her feelings with a reporter. She said that seeing the terrible wounds and suffering from the war made her believe strongly in peace forever.
