Early Life and Military Career
Policarpo Paz García was born in 1932 in a place called La Arada, which is in Goascoran, Valle, Honduras. He became a skilled military officer.
He became well-known during the Football War in 1969. This was a short conflict between Honduras and El Salvador. His actions during this time showed his leadership abilities.
Becoming President of Honduras
In 1978, there was a change in government in Honduras. The military removed the previous leader, General Juan Alberto Melgar. After this, a group of three military leaders, called a junta, took control. Policarpo Paz García was the head of this group.
The junta announced that they would prepare the country to return to civilian rule. This meant that elected officials, not the military, would govern the country again.
Steps Towards Civilian Rule
- In April 1980, people voted to choose members for a special group called a constituent assembly. This assembly's job was to write a new constitution for Honduras.
- On July 20, 1980, the military junta handed over control to this new assembly.
- The assembly then appointed General Paz García as the temporary president. He would serve until new general elections could be held.
The 1981 Elections
The general elections took place in November 1981. These elections were won by Roberto Suazo Córdova and his political group, the Liberal Party of Honduras.
After the elections, Policarpo Paz García peacefully handed over power to the newly elected civilian president, Roberto Suazo Córdova. This was an important step for Honduras in returning to a democratic government.
Later Years and Legacy
Policarpo Paz García passed away on April 16, 2000, when he was 67 years old. He died because of kidney failure. He is remembered for his role in leading Honduras during a time of transition back to civilian rule.
