Juan Alberto Melgar Castro was an important army officer in the Honduran military. He was born on June 20, 1930, and passed away on December 2, 1987. He became the leader of Honduras on April 22, 1975. He served as the country's head of state until August 7, 1978, when other military leaders took over.
Leading Honduras
General Melgar Castro became the leader of Honduras in 1975. He took over from the previous leader, Oswaldo López Arellano. This change happened after some issues involving a company called United Fruit Company.
During his time as leader, a plan to share land more fairly was slowed down. This was because powerful landowners and influential politicians did not want it to happen.
About His Life
General Melgar Castro's wife was Nora Gúnera de Melgar. She was the Mayor of Tegucigalpa, the capital city of Honduras.
In 1997, Nora Gúnera de Melgar was chosen by the National Party to run for President of Honduras. However, she lost the election to Carlos Roberto Flores from the Liberal Party.
General Melgar Castro died from a heart attack near San Pedro Sula on December 2, 1987.
