The Polygrammate is a special group of moths. It has only one type of moth in it. This moth is called the Polygrammate hebraeicum. People also call it the Hebrew moth or just Hebrew.

This unique moth lives in the eastern parts of North America. You can find it from Ontario in Canada, all the way south to Florida, and as far west as Texas. A scientist named Jacob Hübner first described this moth and its group in 1818.

All About the Hebrew Moth

What Does the Hebrew Moth Look Like?

The Hebrew moth is a medium-sized moth. Its wingspan is about 23 to 39 millimeters. That's roughly the length of two to three small paperclips! Adult moths fly around during the warmer months, usually from May to August.

What Do Hebrew Moth Larvae Eat?

The young moths, called larvae or caterpillars, have a favorite food. They love to eat the leaves of black gum trees. These trees are also known as black tupelo.

What is a Monotypic Genus?

When a group of animals or plants is called "monotypic," it means it has only one species. So, the Polygrammate group (or genus) only contains the Hebrew moth. It's the only member of its family!
