Ponciano Leiva Madrid (1821–1896) was a very important person in the history of Honduras. He served as the President of Honduras two times. His first time as president was from 1874 to 1876. He then became president again from 1891 to 1893. Leiva was known for his conservative political views.
Early Life and Military Career
Ponciano Leiva was born in 1821 in a place called Ceguaca, Honduras. He grew up to become a soldier. He was very good at his military work and rose through the ranks to become a general. His military background helped him gain support and power in the country.
First Time as President
Leiva first became president in 1874. He took over leadership after a change in the government. However, his first time as president did not last very long. In 1876, he had to leave office. This happened because of pressure from Justo Rufino Barrios, who was the president of a neighboring country, Guatemala.
Second Time as President
After his first presidency, Leiva continued to be involved in Honduran politics. He worked as the minister of war for another president, Luis Bográn. Later, in 1891, Ponciano Leiva was elected president again. The election happened on November 10, 1891, and he won with the most votes. His main opponent in that election was Policarpo Bonilla.
His second term as president also faced challenges. In 1893, Leiva decided to resign from his position. He stepped down because there was a threat of a major uprising or revolution in the country. After he resigned, Domingo Vásquez took over as the new president of Honduras. Ponciano Leiva passed away in 1896.
