Ponderosa is a small community located in Tulare County, California. It is called a "census-designated place" (CDP), which means it's an area defined by the government for counting people. Ponderosa sits high up in the mountains, at an elevation of about 7,231 feet (2,204 meters) above sea level. In 2020, only 51 people lived there.
To reach Ponderosa, you can drive about 43 miles (69 kilometers) from Porterville. The road is very curvy and climbs about 6,772 feet (2,064 meters) in elevation.

History
Ponderosa began as a large area of land, over 280 acres (113 hectares), used for sheep grazing. This land was originally owned by a person named Alex Kramer. Over time, his family sold off parts of the property.
In 1963, a real estate developer named Don Carter bought about one-third of the land. He then divided his portion into smaller lots and officially opened Ponderosa as a community.
In September 2020, Ponderosa was lucky to avoid major damage from the Sequoia Complex Fire. This natural wildfire caused a lot of destruction in other small communities nearby, but Ponderosa was spared.
