Pontiac is a small community located in the southern part of Ozark County, Missouri, in the United States. It's known as a census-designated place, which means it's an area identified by the U.S. Census Bureau for statistical purposes. However, it's not officially a city or town with its own local government.
Pontiac is found about six miles south of Isabella and 18.5 miles southwest of Gainesville. It sits right on the northeast shore of the beautiful Bull Shoals Lake.
How Pontiac Got Its Name
The community of Pontiac has had its own post office since 1887. The area was named in honor of a famous Native American leader. This leader was Chief Pontiac, an important chief of the Ottawa tribe. It's possible the name came to Missouri through the city of Pontiac, Michigan.
About the Area
Pontiac is located on a ridge, which is like a long, narrow hill, overlooking Bull Shoals Lake. The land here is about 820 feet (250 meters) above sea level. The lake itself usually has a surface elevation of 654 feet (199 meters).
Even though it's a small place, Pontiac has a few important spots. You'll find a post office here, along with a marina where boats can dock on the lake. There are also campgrounds for visitors, a restaurant, and a church. To get to Pontiac, you can take Missouri Route W from Missouri Route 5, which is south of Gainesville.
