Poor Valley is a long valley located in the United States. It stretches across several counties in both Tennessee and Virginia. You can find parts of it in Grainger County, Tennessee, Hawkins County, Tennessee, and Hancock County, Tennessee. It also reaches into Scott County, Virginia, Washington County, Virginia, and Smyth County, Virginia. Sometimes, people also call it Big Poor Valley.
Why is it Called Poor Valley?
The name "Poor Valley" might sound a bit sad, but it simply describes the land. The valley was named this way because the soil found there was not very rich or fertile. This "poor soil" made it challenging for farming in the past.
Was There a Plan for a Park?
In the past, there was an idea to create a state park in Poor Valley. This park would have been called Poor Valley State Park. The plan involved a large area of the valley, about 1,900 to 2,200 acres, in western Hawkins County.
The main reason for wanting to build this park was to help the local economy. Creating a state park could bring more visitors and jobs to the East Tennessee region. However, this plan did not move forward. It eventually stopped in the 1970s, so the park was never built.
