Pope John Paul II Park Reservation, often called Pope Park, is a cool 66-acre Massachusetts state park. It's located right next to the Neponset River in the Dorchester part of Boston. This park is super special because it used to be a landfill and even a drive-in movie theater! Now, it's a beautiful green space. The park is looked after by the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR).

From Landfill to Park

This amazing park wasn't always a park. It was once a place where trash was buried, called a landfill. It was also home to the Neponset Drive-In, where people watched movies from their cars. As part of a big plan to clean up the Lower Neponset River area, this land was transformed. The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) worked hard to turn it into the lovely park you see today. The park was officially established in 2001.

Nature's Comeback

The DCR has done a fantastic job bringing nature back to the park. They restored a special area called a salt marsh. A salt marsh is a coastal wetland that is flooded by ocean tides. It's a very important habitat! They also planted many native trees and shrubs. Because of these efforts, the park now attracts all sorts of birds. You might spot beautiful snowy egrets or tall great blue herons flying around. It's a great place for bird watching!
