Poplar is a small, quiet community in Audubon County, Iowa, in the United States. It is called an "unincorporated community" because it doesn't have its own local government, like a mayor or city council.
Poplar is part of the Poplar Rural District, which is a special historic area. This district was once the biggest place where Danish immigrants settled in the countryside of the United States. You can find Poplar west of the town of Audubon, close to the border of Shelby County.
A Look Back at Poplar
The area around Poplar was mainly settled by immigrants from Denmark. These families came to the United States looking for new opportunities.
A post office was opened in Poplar in 1893. It helped people send and receive mail until it closed in 1903. Poplar also had a general store where people could buy everyday items.
In 1902, there was a plan to create streets and officially make Poplar a town. However, this plan never happened. In 1925, only 17 people lived in Poplar. By 1940, the population was 14.
Even today, people who used to live in Poplar, or who live there now, sometimes have special reunions. They gather to remember the community and share stories.
