The January 2008 Tornado
On January 7, 2008, a strong tornado hit northern Illinois, including Poplar Grove. The weather was unusually warm that day. The tornado caused a lot of damage, especially to a popular local spot called Edward's Apple Orchard.
One person was seriously hurt, and the damage was widespread. This tornado was later rated as an EF3, which means it was very powerful. A storm this big had not happened in the area since 1967.
The next month, the cast of the TV show "Storm Chasers" visited Caledonia Elementary School. They talked to students about tornadoes and how they affect communities. The students and the "Storm Chasers" were even shown on a local news story about the tornado.
The April 2015 Tornadoes
On April 9, 2015, northern Illinois was hit by more tornadoes. Four tornadoes touched down in the areas around Rockford, Rochelle, and Belvidere.
These tornadoes broke records for how late in the year a tornado had hit the area. One of them destroyed the Summerfield Zoo in Belvidere, and some animals sadly died. However, about 200 volunteers helped rescue the remaining animals the very next day.
