Porfirio Alejandro Muñoz Ledo y Lazo de la Vega (born July 23, 1933 – died July 9, 2023) was an important Mexican politician. He helped start the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD). He also served as Mexico's Ambassador to Cuba from 2022 until he passed away.

Life and Early Career
Porfirio Muñoz Ledo was born in Mexico City. He studied law at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) from 1951 to 1955. Later, he continued his studies in Paris, France.
Serving in Government
Muñoz Ledo held important roles in the Mexican government.
- He was the Secretary of Labor from 1972 to 1975 under President Luis Echeverría.
- He also served as the Secretary of Education from 1976 to 1977 under President José López Portillo.
- He was the leader of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) during the presidential election campaign of 1975–1976.
Working with the United Nations
From 1978 to 1985, Muñoz Ledo was Mexico's representative at the United Nations. During this time, he led the UN Security Council. He also led the Group of 77, which is a group of developing countries. He helped with important global economic talks.
A New Political Path
In 1988, Muñoz Ledo left the PRI party. He then became a senator for a new group called the Frente Democrático Nacional (FDN).
Founding the PRD
On May 5, 1989, Muñoz Ledo, along with Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas and other leaders, officially created the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD). This new party focused on center-left and leftist ideas.
Leading the Chamber of Deputies
Muñoz Ledo served in the Chamber of Deputies from 1997 to 1999. He made history by becoming the first person from an opposition party to lead the Mexican Congress. He was the President of the Chamber of Deputies in 1997.
Later Political Roles
- In 2000, he ran for president as a candidate for the Authentic Party of the Mexican Revolution. However, before the election, he decided to support Vicente Fox from the National Action Party.
- After Fox won, Muñoz Ledo became Mexico's ambassador to the European Union from 2001 to 2004.
- In 2005, he rejoined the PRD to support Andrés Manuel López Obrador in his presidential campaign.
- From 2009 to 2012, he again served in the Chamber of Deputies, this time for the PT.
- In 2018, he was proposed to lead the Chamber of Deputies for the National Regeneration Movement (MORENA) party.
- In 2020, he ran for president of the MORENA party, coming in second place.
- In January 2022, he was appointed Ambassador to Cuba.
Porfirio Muñoz Ledo passed away on July 9, 2023, at the age of 89.
