Port Heiden first appeared in the U.S. Census in 1880. Back then, it was called "Mashikh" and was an Aleut village. It was also known as "Meshik" in 1890.
After some time, it was listed as Port Heiden in 1920 and 1930. The city officially became an incorporated city in 1972. It has been included in every census since 1960.
