History of Portal

Portal officially became a town in 1914. The Georgia General Assembly made this happen. It's a bit of a mystery why the name "Portal" was chosen for this place.

  • Dr. Leila Denmark (1898–2012) was a famous pediatrician, author, and researcher. She was a pioneer for women in medicine and lived to be 114 years old!
  • Cameron Sheffield (born 1988) is an American football player. He played as a defensive end for the Edmonton Eskimos. The Kansas City Chiefs chose him in the 2010 NFL draft.
  • Ruby Stone (1924–2013) was born in Portal. She later moved to Idaho and became a politician, serving as a state legislator.
