The Story of Porter Springs
Porter Springs started to become a populated place just before the American Civil War. The first church in the area, Bethlehem Baptist Church, was built before 1877.
In 1895, a post office was opened in Porter Springs. It was named after the postmaster at the time, James McIntosh Porter. By 1896, the community had grown to include two churches, a general store, a cotton gin (a machine that separates cotton fibers), and a drugstore. Around 50 people lived there then.
In the mid-1930s, Porter Springs had three churches and many businesses. The population remained around 50 people in 1936. This number stayed the same until at least 1990. In the early 1990s, Porter Springs was a spread-out rural area with homes, three churches, and a cemetery. The population was still 50 in 2000.
