A Look Back at Porterville's History
Porterville got its name from Willie N. Porter. He was the very first postmaster for the community. The post office first opened its doors on May 24, 1890.
The community grew up along the Kansas City Southern Railway. In the past, Porterville had several stores. Back in 1906, about 200 people lived there.
One important building in Porterville is the Porterville General Store. This store is so special that it is listed on the National Register of Historical Places. This means it's recognized as an important historical site.
