The Castillo de Portillo is an old castle in Portillo, Spain. It is located in the province of Valladolid, in the region of Castile and León. The oldest parts of the castle you see today were built in the 1400s.
A Look Back in Time
This spot, about 23 kilometers from Valladolid, has been a strong defense point for a long time. People first wrote about it in the 900s. Back then, it was mentioned when Moorish groups explored the area. This was during the time of Abd al-Rahman III.
In the 1300s and early 1400s, the Sandoval family owned the castle. In 1392, King Juan II of Castile took it from Diego Gómez de Sandoval. Later, in 1438, the King gave it to Ruy Díaz de Mendoza.
From 1448 to 1452, Don Álvaro de Luna sometimes stayed at Portillo. He was a favorite of King Juan II. Even so, the castle mostly stayed under the King's control. Don Álvaro later lost the King's favor. He was held in Burgos and then sent to Portillo. Two months later, he was tried in Valladolid and sadly lost his life on June 2, 1453.
In 1464, Enrique IV of Castile gave the castle to Alfonso. Juan Pacheco, who was the prince's teacher, looked after it. After Juan Pacheco died in 1474, the castle went to Rodrigo Alfonso de Pimentel. His family owned it until the 1800s. Then, it passed to the Osuna family.
Famous Prisoners
The Castle of Portillo is more famous for the important people it held prisoner. It is not known for big battles. King Juan II of Castile was briefly held here in 1444. He escaped by paying one of his guards.
Old stories also mention that Don Enrique was jailed here. He was the brother of Admiral Don Fabrique. Don Enrique was held for planning against the King.
The castle became a national monument in 1931. Today, the University of Valladolid owns it.
