Posio is a special kind of town in Finland called a municipality. It is located far north in a region known as Lapland. Posio has a population of about 2,923 people. This number was last updated on 31 December 2023.
The municipality covers a large area of about 3,544.90 square kilometres (1,368.69 sq mi). A big part of this area, about 506.14 km2 (195.42 sq mi), is covered by water. This means there are many lakes and rivers! The population density is quite low, meaning there aren't many people living in each square kilometer.
Posio shares its borders with several other municipalities. These include Rovaniemi, Kemijärvi, Ranua, Salla, Kuusamo, Taivalkoski, and Pudasjärvi. The main language spoken in Posio is Finnish.
The biggest employers in Posio are the municipality itself, which provides public services. Another important employer is Pentik, a famous company that makes pottery and home decor. Farming, especially dairy farming, is also a key part of the local economy. A major road, the European route E63, passes through the northeastern part of Posio.
One of the most interesting places in Posio is the Korouoma canyon and nature reserve. It's known for its stunning ice walls in winter. About 8 kilometers north of Posio's center, there's even a tiny "microstate" called Valtio
