Early Life and First Steps in Music
Darryl Gibson grew up in the Bronx, New York. He spent a lot of his childhood near Richman (Echo) Park. This was a place where early hip hop DJs like Grandmaster Flash and Busy Bee would often have outdoor parties. These parties inspired him to become a rapper.
One day, a group called The Fearless Four was performing in his neighborhood. They invited young Darryl to say a rhyme into their microphone. This was a big moment for him! His first music group was with his family, called Disco Cousins. He rapped under the name Baby Breeze back then.
Later, Darryl joined a rap group called Almighty God Committee. He used the name Positive Knowledge Allah. During a TV rap contest, their DJ played the wrong song. The rest of the group left the stage, but Darryl kept going by himself. After that, he became a solo artist and shortened his name to Positive K.
Starting a Solo Career
Positive K's first solo song was "Getting Paid." It was produced by Glenn Toby, another rapper. This song helped him get noticed. It was even included on a special album called Fast Money in 1986. This album also featured early recordings from other famous hip hop artists.
In 1987, Positive K signed with First Priority Music. He worked with talented producers like Grand Puba and Daddy-O. He released several songs that appeared on underground hip hop albums. His song "I'm Not Havin' It," a duet with MC Lyte, was his first song to appear on a Billboard music chart in 1989. This helped him become more well-known in the hip hop world.
Positive K later left First Priority Music. He felt that some artists were getting special treatment.
Big Hits and New Adventures
After leaving his first label, Positive K started working closely with Big Daddy Kane. Big Daddy Kane would invite him on stage to freestyle with other rising stars like Jay-Z. Positive K also appeared on albums by Brand Nubian and Grand Puba. His own song "Nightshift" also became popular. All of this helped him get a deal with a major record label.
In 1992, Positive K released his first full album, The Skills Dat Pay Da Bills, with Island Records. The album featured different styles of music. The most successful song from the album was "I Got a Man." This song was inspired by his earlier duet with MC Lyte. For "I Got a Man," he changed his own voice to sound like the female rapper in the song. "I Got A Man" became a huge hit, reaching #14 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1993.
Positive K also appeared in a remix of a song for The Beavis and Butt-head Experience movie soundtrack. In 1993, he had a small role in the Robert De Niro film A Bronx Tale. He was also recognized as one of the early hip hop pioneers on a TV show.
After touring a lot for his album, Positive K took a break from making music. He started a company that helped promote other artists' records. He worked with famous artists like Outkast and Puff Daddy. Eventually, he decided to take a short break from the music business.
